Self-drive Tour in South Africa, from Cape Town to the Big Five 4*

Your journey begins in Cape Town, a vibrant city nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the majestic Table Mountain. This southern gem will captivate you with its lifestyle, refined gastronomy and enchanting atmosphere. Explore the Cape Peninsula at your own pace in your hire car: from penguin-filled beaches to the spectacular cliffs of Cape Point, every detour reveals a magnificent setting.

Then head north-east to the next stage of your journey: an exclusive experience in a private game reserve close to the legendary Kruger National Park. Two emotionally charged days await, filled with game drives led by experienced rangers in search of the famous Big Five and other fascinating wildlife.

Designed for travellers seeking independence without compromising on comfort, this self-drive tour offers a perfect blend of charming towns, stunning landscapes and unforgettable experiences in the heart of the African savannah.

Your day-by-day itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Cape Town

Day 2: The Cape of Good Hope Peninsula

Day 3: On the Wine Route

Day 4: Cape Town - Mabula Reserve

Day 5 and 6: Mabula Reserve

Day 7: Private Reserve - Johannesburg

Day 8: Johannesburg - Return flight

Your detailed itinerary

At the airport, you will be met by an English-speaking representative, who will give you your travel documents and help you collect your hire car.

You will then have free time to explore the city at your own pace. Nestled between the sea and the mountains, Cape Town will captivate you with its way of life, its cuisine and its spectacular natural beauty. The peninsula boasts exceptional flora, bustling markets and a unique atmosphere.

Recommended visits include a city tour, a climb up Table Mountain (weather permitting) and a panoramic view from Signal Hill.

Optional tours and excursions: Table Mountain cable car ticket: €30

Meals are not included

Overnight stay at the Cape Milner Hotel

After breakfast.

Here's a suggestion for organising your day:

Take a full-day trip to explore the Cape of Good Hope Peninsula. You'll pass beautiful beaches such as Clifton, Bantry Bay, Camps Bay and Noordhoek, all renowned for their pristine white sands.

Stop off at Hout Bay for a cruise to Seal Island, where you can watch hundreds of sea lions frolicking in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

You will then visit the charming coastal village of Simon's Town, with a stop at Boulders Beach, famous for its colony of over 700 African penguins.

Finally, explore the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, often mistaken for the southernmost point of Africa. From the lighthouse at the tip of the Cape, the spectacular view will give you the impression of being at the end of the world.

Lunch and dinner are not included

Optional Tours and Excursions: Cooking class and lunch at Cape Malay (English-speaking, non-private): €25

Overnight stay at the Cape Milner Hotel

Breakfast.

We recommend that you explore the famous Wine Route, in the heart of the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek regions.

With over 100,000 hectares of vineyards, South Africa has become the world's eighth-largest wine producer. Its wines are renowned for offering excellent value for money and rival those of other major wine-producing regions. Only the Cape Province has an ideal climate for growing grapes, which is why most producers are based in this region. The Wine Route, formed by the triangle of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, is just a few kilometres from Cape Town.

Lunch and dinner are not included.

Return to Cape Town at the end of the day.

Overnight in a guesthouse or hotel.

Optional tours or excursions: Ticket for the Robben Island tour (4 hours): €45

Breakfast.

Drive to Cape Town airport, where you will drop off your hire car, then fly to Johannesburg (flight included).

USEFUL INFORMATION

Entry requirements:

For tourist visits to South Africa of less than 90 days, holders of a British passport (ordinary, diplomatic or service) are exempt from the requirement to obtain a visa in advance. A 90-day residence permit will be issued at the border upon entry into South African territory.

Passports must have at least two blank pages and remain valid for a further 30 days after the planned date of departure from South Africa. Otherwise, travellers will be refused entry on arrival.

Vaccinations:

No vaccinations are compulsory, but certain vaccinations are recommended; ensure that you are up to date with your routine vaccinations as well as those required for all the geographical areas you will be visiting.

An update of the diphtheria-tetanus-polio (DTP) vaccination is strongly recommended, as is the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination, as the region is at high risk; a tuberculosis vaccination is also advisable.

Depending on local travel conditions, vaccinations against typhoid fever, meningitis and viral hepatitis A and B may be recommended.

A rabies vaccination may also be recommended in certain cases, depending on the circumstances and locations visited. Seek advice from your doctor or an international vaccination centre.

Malaria

Malaria-endemic areas (classified as Zone 3 in terms of resistance) remain in the provinces of Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal, on the borders with Mozambique, Swaziland and Zimbabwe, particularly in the Kruger Park region.

Malaria is a (potentially serious) parasitic disease transmitted by mosquito bites. There are two complementary forms of malaria prevention: protection against mosquitoes and drug treatment. Standard measures to protect against mosquitoes in the evening and at night are strongly recommended.

General preventive measures to protect yourself from mosquitoes:

Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-coloured clothing that covers the skin;

Use skin repellents: see the "Health" section for more information at https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/south-africa

Prefer protected accommodation (mosquito nets, electric repellents, coils, air conditioning, etc.);

Eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites (containers of stagnant water such as saucers under flower pots, guttering, tyres, etc.).

To protect yourself from gastrointestinal or contact-based infections:

Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or hand sanitiser, especially before and after meals or using the toilet;

Ensure food is of good quality and, above all, that it is cooked thoroughly;

Avoid eating raw or undercooked food (fish, meat, poultry, milk);

Peel fruit and vegetables or wash them thoroughly (with clean water);

Avoid raw vegetables, shellfish, reheated dishes and cold buffets;

In urban areas, tap water is safe to drink. However, in rural areas, drink only bottled water or beverages, or water that has been made safe to drink (by filtering, boiling or, failing that, using a disinfectant);

Avoid ice cubes and ice cream, as well as fresh fruit juices, raw vegetables and unpeeled fruit;

Only consume pasteurised or boiled milk.

Formalities

Please refer to the information below, which is subject to change and must be carefully verified prior to departure with the relevant authorities.

U.S. passport holders travelling to South Africa for tourism purposes must hold a passport valid for at least 30 days beyond the intended date of departure from South Africa and containing at least two consecutive blank pages. South African authorities strictly enforce passport requirements, and damaged passports may result in refusal of entry.

American citizens are visa-exempt for tourist travel to South Africa. Upon arrival, a stay of up to 90 days is generally granted. The exact length of stay is determined by the immigration officer at the port of entry and may be shorter depending on individual circumstances. Any extension of stay must be applied for before the initial authorization expires through the South African Department of Home Affairs. Official information regarding entry and stay conditions is available at:

https://www.dha.gov.za/

Upon entry into South Africa, travellers may be required to present proof of onward or return travel, evidence of accommodation for part or all of the stay, and proof of sufficient financial means. Immigration authorities may conduct identity checks and additional verifications and reserve the right to deny entry if admission requirements are not fully met.

No vaccinations are mandatory for travellers arriving directly from the United States. However, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers aged one year and over arriving from, or transiting for more than 12 hours through, countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. Travellers are advised to ensure that routine vaccinations are up to date and to consult official health guidance prior to travel, particularly via the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel

and the U.S. Department of State travel advisory website:

https://travel.state.gov/

All visitors must comply strictly with South African laws and regulations throughout their stay. Identity checks are common, and penalties for violations can be severe. Travellers are advised to carry a copy of their passport and entry stamp at all times and to follow the instructions of local authorities.
