Mount Yoshino is renowned for its spectacular cherry blossom landscapes: in spring, more than 30,000 sakura cover the hills in pink, offering a unique spectacle (UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the ‘Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range’). Outside of the flowering season, Yoshino remains a pleasant place for hiking, steeped in spirituality (Kinpusen-ji temples, mountain shrines) and offering panoramic views of the region.
- Asuka – Immerse yourself in ancient Japan. Asuka, an hour's train ride from Nara, was the cradle of the Japanese state in the 5th and 6th centuries and the country's first historic capital. Here you will discover a rural landscape of hills and terraced rice fields evoking a timeless Japan. Once there, it is recommended to hire bicycles to explore the countryside and visit the scattered ruins: the mysterious kofun (stone tombs such as Ishibutai), ancient temples (Asukadera had the oldest Buddha statue in Japan) and various legendary megaliths. A day in Asuka offers a journey back in time to discover the origins of Japanese culture. After your visits, relax in the thermal waters of Asuka-no-Yu.
- Mount Shigi (Shigisan) – This is an unusual option for travellers seeking an off-the-beaten-track experience. Located on the border between Nara and Osaka, Mount Shigi is a place steeped in legend, as it is linked to Prince Shôtoku and the introduction of Buddhism to Japan. Here, visitors can explore the Chogosonshi-ji temple complex, renowned for its enormous tiger statue and lantern-lined paved paths. Mount Shigi offers a variety of activities, including forest hikes and panoramic views of the Yamato Plain from the temple's main hall. You can even stay in a temple (shukubō) for a unique spiritual experience. The site is accessible from Nara by train and on foot or by shuttle bus, and is ideal for experiencing an authentic and little-known side of the region on a half-day to full-day excursion.
