Discover the destination

destination

Known first as Byzantium, then Constantinople, and now Istanbul, the city nicknamed "the second Rome" is overflowing with history. Located at the crossroads between Asia and Europe, it is home to a cosmopolitan population that is rightly proud of its ancient heritage. Explore the city on a tour that will take you from the Hagia Sophia to Topkapi Palace. Enjoy a glass of apple tea on the Galata bridge and in the evening, relax in a traditional hammam.

Important information about your destination

Customs and traditions

When visiting mosques, shoes must be removed. Women must cover their heads. It is advisable to avoid visiting mosques on Fridays or at prayer time.

Nudism is forbidden. It is advisable to avoid kissing too demonstratively in the street, especially in more conservative regions and areas.

In some museums, an admission fee may be charged for taking photographs.

Time difference

Ankara in Türkiye is located in the UTC/GMT+3 time zone all year round.

London, United Kingdom time is 2:00 hours behind Ankara, Türkiye

Electricity and internet access

In Türkiye, type F sockets are used (European standard).

Internet access is highly developed in Türkiye, with a secure WiFi network in the vast majority of hotels, as well as cellular connections.

Safety

Safety is generally good in Türkiye, with very few incidents of assault reported. However, it is essential to remain vigilant. Make sure you keep an eye on your personal belongings when travelling. Keep valuables, such as your passport, in locked suitcases or in your room safe. Carry only the money you need. Avoid deserted alleyways, especially at night. Watch your pockets and bags, both in town and around airports.

As in all major cities, extra vigilance is recommended in tourist areas, particularly in Istanbul, where it is advisable to look after your personal documents.

Taking a stance on subjects of a political nature, particularly on social networks (including sharing) in Türkiye, may result in a ban on entering or leaving Turkish territory and in some cases in criminal proceedings.

Currency

The official currency is the Turkish lira, and you can change your money in exchange offices, hotels and banks, of which there are many, especially in the big cities. In some tourist areas, the euro is occasionally accepted.

Weather

The best times to visit Türkiye are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November). In fact, midsummer temperatures can be very high (around 35-40°C), which can make cultural visits less enjoyable. Ideal, however, for beach activities.

Languages

The official language in Türkiye is Turkish, but there are other minority languages spoken by some locals (Arabic, Greek...) and English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

Accommodation quality

The quality of accommodation in Türkiye varies, but in general it can be said that it is often comparable to European standards, especially in large cities and tourist areas.

Food quality

Internationally renowned, Turkish gastronomy offers a wide range of culinary specialties to suit all tastes. The general quality of food and food safety is very good, especially in tourist areas.
