Formalities

For information on travel formalities and the documents required for the destination mentioned on this page, you should consult the consular services or embassies of the country of destination and possible transit. The relevant contact details can be found on the website of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs at the following address: https://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/fr/dfae/representations-et-conseils-aux-voyageurs.html and https://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/fr/dfae/representations-et-conseils-aux-voyageurs/conseils-voyageurs/visa.html.

Please be advised of a change in regulations concerning travel to Zanzibar. Foreign visitors to Zanzibar are now required to take out travel insurance upon arrival (up to 92 days' stay in the islands). All foreign visitors must take out mandatory travel insurance at a cost of US$44 per person directly from the website of the national insurer, Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, prior to arrival: www.visitzanzibar.go.tz. To learn more about the new requirement, please click here: https://visitzanzibar.go.tz/faqs.

Should any issues arise, please contact the Swiss embassy or consulate directly. You can find their contact details on the website of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs at: https://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/fr/dfae/representations-et-conseils-aux-voyageurs.html. Non-Swiss nationals are invited to contact the embassies and consulates of the country of destination and possible transit, as well as the diplomatic or consular representation of their country of origin in Switzerland.

Vaccination

  • Please ensure that you have received all the necessary vaccinations, including those required for the areas you will be visiting.
  • It is recommended that you have your diphtheria, tetanus and polio (DTP) vaccinations up to date, as well as mumps, rubella and measles vaccinations for children. Anti-tuberculosis vaccination is also recommended.
  • Other recommended vaccinations: depending on local travel conditions, vaccinations against typhoid fever and viral hepatitis A and B may be recommended.
    It is preferable to be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis A + C + Y + W135.
  • Vaccination against rabies may also be recommended in certain cases, depending on the conditions and location of your stay. Ask your doctor or an international vaccination centre for advice.
  • The information provided by the Tanzanian authorities regarding vaccination against yellow fever is unclear and requires further clarification. In principle, vaccination against yellow fever is only mandatory for individuals arriving from a country where the disease is endemic, or for those who have spent more than 12 hours in transit through one of these countries. In practice, proof of vaccination is often required without discrimination. While vaccination against yellow fever certified by an international vaccination booklet can help avoid administrative problems at the airport, it should be noted that this does not constitute a legal or medical obligation.

Visa

The Tanzanian Embassy in Switzerland has not been issuing visas since November 2019, and only an e-visa can be obtained, solely via the government website (https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/).

In the event that travellers are unable to apply for a visa prior to departure, they may obtain one at the international airports of Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro, as well as at the ports of Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kigoma.

When crossing the border, immigration officers may reduce the validity of a visa issued online. It is therefore advisable to check the endorsement placed by the immigration authorities on the visa itself and to adhere strictly to the length of stay granted.

It is imperative to inform the Tanzanian authority issuing the visa that the purpose of the stay is for tourism. Please note that tourist visas cost different amounts. Any individual staying in Tanzania on a tourist visa for business reasons is liable to prosecution with serious consequences, including heavy fines, deportation and even a temporary or permanent ban from the country. For example, it is forbidden to carry out any activity (even voluntary work) on a tourist visa: those concerned must apply for a type C residence permit, even for a short stay.

Kindly note that only post-2006 US dollars are accepted for visa fee payment upon entry to Tanzania. A tourist visa costs €50 or US$50 (no change possible).

For further information, please consult the Tanzanian Immigration website (https://immigration.go.tz/).

Identity

Please be advised that the Tanzanian authorities require a passport that is valid for at least six months from the date of arrival in Tanzania.
