The Tanzanian Embassy in Switzerland has not been issuing visas since November 2019, and only an e-visa can be obtained, solely via the government website (https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/).
In the event that travellers are unable to apply for a visa prior to departure, they may obtain one at the international airports of Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro, as well as at the ports of Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kigoma.
When crossing the border, immigration officers may reduce the validity of a visa issued online. It is therefore advisable to check the endorsement placed by the immigration authorities on the visa itself and to adhere strictly to the length of stay granted.
It is imperative to inform the Tanzanian authority issuing the visa that the purpose of the stay is for tourism. Please note that tourist visas cost different amounts. Any individual staying in Tanzania on a tourist visa for business reasons is liable to prosecution with serious consequences, including heavy fines, deportation and even a temporary or permanent ban from the country. For example, it is forbidden to carry out any activity (even voluntary work) on a tourist visa: those concerned must apply for a type C residence permit, even for a short stay.
Kindly note that only post-2006 US dollars are accepted for visa fee payment upon entry to Tanzania. A tourist visa costs €50 or US$50 (no change possible).
