Formalities

Please refer to the information below regarding the travel formalities applicable to Canadian nationals travelling to Japan. Travellers must verify official requirements prior to departure through the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (https://www.mofa.go.jp (https://www.mofa.go.jp)), the Immigration Services Agency of Japan (https://www.moj.go.jp/isa (https://www.moj.go.jp/isa)), and the Government of Canada travel advice (https://travel.gc.ca (https://travel.gc.ca)).

Canadian nationals are visa-exempt for short stays in Japan for tourism, business, or private visits. They may enter Japan without a visa for a maximum stay of up to 90 days. This visa exemption does not permit any paid activities in Japan, and the authorised length of stay is determined by Japanese immigration authorities upon arrival.

A valid Canadian passport is required to enter Japan. The passport must be valid for the entire duration of the intended stay. It is recommended that the passport be in good condition and contain at least one blank page to allow for entry and exit procedures carried out by Japanese authorities.

Upon arrival in Japan, immigration authorities may request proof of onward or return travel, as well as details of accommodation for the duration of the stay. Travellers may also be required to demonstrate that they have sufficient financial means to support themselves during their visit. Admission conditions are assessed individually at the port of entry.

There are no mandatory vaccinations required for entry into Japan for Canadian nationals. Travellers are advised to ensure that routine vaccinations are up to date in accordance with official health recommendations. Health requirements may change and should be checked prior to travel through official sources.

Canadian nationals are required to comply with all laws and regulations in force in Japan during their stay. Identity checks may be carried out at entry and within the country, and travellers must be able to present valid identification when requested. Entry and stay conditions are subject to change, and only official Japanese government sources should be relied upon for accurate and up-to-date information.
