Customs and traditions

Bulgaria, located in the Balkans, is a country rich in ancient traditions and customs. Bulgarian hospitality is a defining characteristic; hosts often offer food and drinks to guests, even without prior notice. Greetings typically involve a handshake, though close friends and family sometimes kiss each other on both cheeks.

Bulgarians enjoy celebrating various traditional events throughout the year, such as Martisor in early spring or the national holiday on March 3, which commemorates Bulgaria’s Liberation Day. Bulgarian cuisine is delicious, featuring traditional dishes such as banitsa, a typical pastry, and kavarma, a slow-cooked meat dish. Rakia, a local alcoholic beverage, is often served with meals.

The Orthodox religion plays an important role in the cultural life of Bulgarians, and many religious holidays are celebrated throughout the year. Folkloric traditions, such as dances and songs, contribute to the richness of Bulgaria’s cultural heritage. Superstitions are also prevalent, with popular beliefs such as avoiding walking under a ladder, which is considered to bring bad luck.

These various elements illustrate the depth and diversity of the customs and traditions deeply rooted in Bulgarian society, reflecting its history and identity.

Canadian nationals may enter Bulgaria without a visa for short stays for tourism, business, or private visits. Bulgaria is a member of the European Union and applies the rules governing short stays in the European travel area. Canadian citizens may stay in Bulgaria for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. This visa exemption applies only to temporary visits such as tourism, family visits, or short-term business travel. Any stay exceeding the authorised duration, or travel for purposes such as employment, study, or long-term residence, requires a long-stay visa or residence permit issued in advance by the competent Bulgarian authorities.

Travellers must hold a Canadian passport valid for the entire duration of their intended stay in Bulgaria. The passport must be in good condition and it is recommended that it contain at least one blank page for entry and exit stamps. Border authorities may refuse entry if travel documents do not meet the official requirements.

Upon arrival in Bulgaria, border authorities may request proof of onward or return travel, confirmed accommodation covering the entire duration of the stay, and evidence of sufficient financial means to support the visit. Travellers may also be required to demonstrate that their stay is temporary and that they will leave the country before the authorised period expires. Comprehensive travel medical insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation for the entire duration of the stay is strongly recommended.

No mandatory vaccinations are required for travellers arriving directly from Canada. However, travellers arriving from or transiting through a country where yellow fever is present may be required to present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate in accordance with international health regulations. Travellers are advised to ensure that routine vaccinations are up to date and to consult a healthcare professional prior to departure, as health requirements may change.

Canadian nationals must comply with all Bulgarian laws and regulations during their stay. Identity checks may be carried out at any time by the competent authorities, and travellers must be able to present valid identification when requested. Entry and stay conditions may change, and travellers should rely only on official Bulgarian and Canadian government sources for accurate and up-to-date information.
